In the fall of 2016 BAUER Foundation Corp. (BFC) was hired by Kast Construc-tion to install deep foundations for the Channel Club development in downtown Tampa, FL. BFC’s project scope included installing 100 drilled shafts up to 104 ft deep on a tight infi ll site. The soil condi-tions on site included loose sands at the top 10 ft underlain by clay and limestone. The limestone bedrock was highly frag-mented and contained voids throughout. These soil conditions as well as a high ground water table were signifi cant chal-lenges to drilling and ruled out the use of water as a drilling fl uid. Instead, BFC ad-dressed these challenging conditions by utilizing a temporary starter casing and polymer drilling fl uid, which proved suc-cessful.
